Everyone says AI-powered. Here is the mechanism instead: an autonomous engineering loop that takes a card from a board, plans it, builds it, verifies it in a real browser against the acceptance criteria as written, deploys it, and writes the result back to the board only once the live build is confirmed to carry the change — across the whole portfolio at once.
The One-Writer Protocol
Many agents, many repositories, at most one writer inside any one repository, always.
Every writer takes the same lease before its first change and holds it through its last — a scheduled cycle, a job handed to a different model, or a human steering an agent by hand. Two repositories never contend, so the portfolio moves in parallel at full speed. Inside one repository writers are strictly serialised, so nothing is ever half-written by two hands.
Ventures advance simultaneously. A second writer arriving at a busy repository waits for the lease rather than joining the work in progress. A crashed writer's claim is reclaimed by liveness checks, not by magic.
Board-driven, evidence-closed
Work starts as a card a human wrote and ends with the deployed commit verified against the acceptance criteria. The board is the interface; there is no second, private queue.
Typed gates, not vibes
A stage that cannot produce a valid structured result has not finished, whatever its summary claims. "Looks done" is not a state a task can be in — which is what makes the loop safe to leave running.
One writer, enforced
The lease is taken before the first change, not asked for politely. An agent that never registered is still detected from the process table, because a safety rule that only covers well-behaved participants is not a safety rule.
An honest ledger
Every cycle writes one row: what ran, what it cost, how it ended. A deferral is recorded as a deferral. The loop is auditable after the fact by construction.
